Free E-Book: Teaching Students to Plan

When our children are middle schoolers, we often feel like there’s a lot of time left to teach and train them. After all, high school is still a few years away, and graduation four years beyond that! But, it all tends to sneak up on us, and we suddenly realize just how much last-minute preparation we need to pour into our students.

That’s one of the reasons early time management training is so important, and middle school is a perfect time to start! Middle schoolers are at an ideal stage of learning to begin grasping time management skills, and the Student Planner is here to help. Specially designed to train middle schoolers to develop routines, keep track of assignments, and manage general life tasks as well, the Student Planner helps lay foundations that will carry your child solidly through high school and into adulthood.

Step by Step Instructions

The planner opens with a comprehensive article outlining how to best utilize each section of the planner.

Weekly Layout

In an effort to keep students on task, the weekly layout includes designated areas for daily assignments, practice, and chores. This should aid students in remembering to plan for each area of life.

Routine

After establishing a daily routine with your student, they can utilize the five boxes on each weekday to check off completion. The flexibility within the routine section allows you to create a routine that helps train habits. I suggest training children in a morning routine such as:

  • 1. Make your bed
  • 2. Clean your room
  • 3. Brush your teeth
  • 4. Wash your face
  • 5. Get dressed for the day
After a student has established a habit in their morning routine, they can create additional routines for school, extracurricular activities, and other daily routines that help them grow into a responsible young adult.

Updated Reference

With a whole new look, the reference section has a more modern design and updated information.

Student Planners

While homeschooling, one of my daughters seemed to struggle to get her math done in a timely manner. She was fantastic at solving math problems but lacked a sense of urgency in completing her lessons.

Spending time in prayer over the frustration and the need for help, I came up with an idea. With a sheet of paper in hand, I jotted down each of her lessons for the day and then added other chores and responsibilities.

When I communicated expectations and gave details in a written format, she excelled! Within a few weeks, she was commenting on my beautifully designed planner, so I created one for her to have all of her information in written form. All my planners began with a need at home and now are published for all homeschool families to benefit from.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this planner recommended for?

This planner is designed for students in 5th-8th grade.

How do I encourage time management skills in children too young for this planner?

Your Well Planned Day planner provides the perfect tool for younger children! In that planner, you will find tear-out cards with space for chores on one side and school assignments on the other. Simply tear out the cards, write each child's name at the top, laminate each card, then use wet erase markers to note chores and assignments for each week. Wipe them off at the end of the week and begin again on Monday!

How do my students use the routine boxes?

Does your student have sets of tasks that are the same each day? For instance, what does his or her morning or bedtime routine look like? Assign a number to each routine set (for instance, morning routine can be #1) and make a list in the front of the planner so you student knows all tasks that must be accomplished before completing that routine. Once all of those tasks are completed each day, he or she may check off that number. Find more detailed information in the "How to Use Your Planner" article in the planner.

Does this planner replace a need for Well Planned Day?

Although middle schoolers can learn to keep up with a great deal on their own, they're probably not quite ready to be independently responsible for school assignments yet. Well Planned Day, My Well Planned Day online planner and lesson plans, or a curriculum with established lesson plans are still a good idea.
